What Telma H Tablet is used for

• High blood pressure
• Protection of the kidneys in diabetes
• Heart failure and after a heart attack
• Reducing cardiovascular risk
• High blood pressure, usually combined with another agent

How it works

Telmisartan

Telmisartan blocks the receptor for angiotensin II, the hormone that tightens blood vessels. The vessels relax, blood pressure falls and the strain on the heart and kidneys is reduced.

Hydrochlorothiazide

Hydrochlorothiazide makes the kidney excrete more salt and water, which reduces blood volume and, over time, relaxes the blood vessels.

Common side effects

• Dizziness, especially with the first doses
• Tiredness
• Back or joint pain
• Raised potassium
• Passing urine more often
• Dizziness on standing
• Low potassium and sodium
• Raised uric acid and blood sugar
• Sun sensitivity

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Quick tips

• Take it at the same time each day; it works over 24 hours
• Do not use potassium-containing salt substitutes without asking your doctor
• Stop it and tell your doctor at once if you become pregnant
• Take it in the morning so you are not woken at night to pass urine
• Have potassium and sodium checked periodically
• Use sunscreen and report any new skin lesion
