What Telma-AM Tablet is used for

• High blood pressure

How it works

Telmisartan

Telmisartan blocks the receptor for angiotensin II, the hormone that tightens blood vessels. The vessels relax, blood pressure falls and the strain on the heart and kidneys is reduced.

Amlodipine

Amlodipine blocks calcium from entering the muscle in the artery wall. The arteries relax and widen, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow to the heart.

Common side effects

• Dizziness, especially with the first doses
• Tiredness
• Back or joint pain
• Raised potassium
• Swelling of the ankles and feet
• Flushing
• Headache
• Palpitations

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Safety advice

Quick tips

• Take it at the same time each day; it works over 24 hours
• Do not use potassium-containing salt substitutes without asking your doctor
• Stop it and tell your doctor at once if you become pregnant
• Ankle swelling is the commonest complaint — raising the legs helps, and your doctor can change or add a medicine
• It can be taken at any time of day, but keep it consistent
• Do not stop it suddenly; blood pressure will rebound
