What Sumo Tablet is used for

• Short-term relief of acute pain
• Painful osteoarthritis flare-ups

How it works

Nimesulide

Nimesulide is a selective COX-2 inhibitor. It reduces the prostaglandins responsible for pain and inflammation with somewhat less effect on the stomach lining than older NSAIDs.

Paracetamol

Paracetamol blocks the production of prostaglandins in the brain — the chemical messengers that create the sensation of pain and push the body's temperature set-point up. It relieves pain and brings fever down but has very little effect on inflammation.

Common side effects

• Heartburn and stomach discomfort
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Dizziness
• Rash
• Generally very well tolerated at normal doses
• Nausea in some people
• Rash (uncommon)

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Safety advice

Quick tips

• Do not take it for more than 15 days, and never give it to a child
• Stop at once and see a doctor if you develop yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or unusual tiredness
• Paracetamol is the safer first choice for ordinary fever and pain
• Check the label of cold, flu and pain combination medicines — many already contain paracetamol, and doses add up
• Never exceed 4 grams (usually 8 tablets of 500 mg) in 24 hours for an adult
• If fever does not settle in 3 days, see a doctor rather than continuing on your own
