How it works
Chlorhexidine gluconate
Chlorhexidine disrupts bacterial cell membranes and binds to skin and mucous membranes, so it keeps working for hours after application.
Silver sulfadiazine
Silver sulfadiazine releases silver ions that kill a wide range of bacteria on the surface of a burn, reducing the risk of wound infection.
Common side effects
- Brown staining of the teeth with prolonged mouthwash use
- Altered taste
- Mouth irritation
- Skin irritation
- Local burning
- Grey or brown staining of the wound
- Itching
- Rash
Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.
⚠ Important warnings
- Serious allergic reactions have been reported
- Should not enter the eye or the middle ear
- Should not be used in sulfa allergy
- Large areas in infants can affect blood counts and cause jaundice
- Not for use in pregnancy near term

Quick tips
- Do not use the mouthwash for more than 2 weeks continuously — it stains the teeth
- Rinse at least 30 minutes after brushing; toothpaste inactivates it
- Do not swallow it
- Apply a layer to the cleaned burn as directed and cover
- Do not use it if you are allergic to sulfa drugs
- A burn larger than the palm of the hand, or on the face, hands or joints, needs medical assessment
