What Nizral Cream is used for

• Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis (shampoo)
• Ringworm and tinea (cream)
• Pityriasis versicolor
• Fungal skin infections

How it works

Ketoconazole disrupts the fungal cell membrane. Because of liver toxicity it is now used almost entirely as a shampoo or cream rather than as tablets.

Common side effects

• Skin irritation or burning
• Dryness
• Change in hair texture with the shampoo
• Itching

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Safety advice

Quick tips

• Leave the shampoo on the scalp for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing — contact time is what works
• Use it twice a week during a flare, then weekly
• The cream should be continued for a week after the rash clears
