What Meftal-Spas Tablet is used for

• Stomach and intestinal cramps
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Period pain
• Colicky pain in children (only on a doctor's advice)
• Period pain and heavy periods
• Fever in children (as a syrup, on prescription)
• Dental and muscular pain
• Headache

How it works

Dicyclomine

Dicyclomine blocks acetylcholine at the muscle of the gut wall, which stops the muscle from contracting into a painful spasm.

Mefenamic acid

Mefenamic acid blocks prostaglandin production, which makes it particularly useful for the cramping pain of periods where prostaglandins drive the uterine contractions.

Common side effects

• Dry mouth
• Blurred vision
• Drowsiness
• Constipation
• Difficulty passing urine
• Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea
• Dizziness
• Rash

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Quick tips

• Take about half an hour before food for the best effect on cramps
• Suck sugar-free sweets or sip water for the dry mouth
• Do not drive if your vision blurs
• Start it at the first sign of period pain rather than waiting for it to become severe
• Take after food
• Do not use for more than 7 days at a stretch without medical advice
