How it works
Chlorhexidine gluconate
Chlorhexidine disrupts bacterial cell membranes and binds to skin and mucous membranes, so it keeps working for hours after application.
Clobetasol
Clobetasol is one of the strongest topical steroids. It suppresses stubborn skin inflammation that milder preparations cannot control.
Common side effects
- Brown staining of the teeth with prolonged mouthwash use
- Altered taste
- Mouth irritation
- Skin irritation
- Skin thinning and stretch marks
- Burning and stinging
- Visible blood vessels
- Acne or increased hair growth
- Rebound flare on stopping
Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.
⚠ Important warnings
- Serious allergic reactions have been reported
- Should not enter the eye or the middle ear
- Very potent — prolonged use, use on the face or groin, or use over large areas can cause permanent skin thinning and suppress the body's own steroid production
- Never use it for fungal infections

Quick tips
- Do not use the mouthwash for more than 2 weeks continuously — it stains the teeth
- Rinse at least 30 minutes after brushing; toothpaste inactivates it
- Do not swallow it
- Use it for short defined courses, usually no more than 2 weeks at a time
- Never apply it to the face, groin or armpits unless a dermatologist has told you to
- Do not use steroid creams for ringworm — they make it much worse
