What Folvite 5mg Tablet is used for

• Prevention of neural tube defects in pregnancy
• Folate deficiency anaemia
• Support during methotrexate treatment
• Anaemia in pregnancy and chronic illness

How it works

Folic acid is needed to make DNA and new red blood cells. In early pregnancy it is essential for the correct closure of the baby's spine.

Common side effects

• Very well tolerated
• Occasional nausea
• Bloating
• Rash (rare)

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Quick tips

• It should ideally be started 3 months before conception, not after the pregnancy is confirmed
• Green leafy vegetables and pulses are good dietary sources
• Ask about B12 as well if you are vegetarian
