What Drotin-M Tablet is used for

• Stomach cramps and colic

How it works

Drotaverine

Drotaverine relaxes the smooth muscle in the wall of the gut, urinary tract and uterus by blocking the enzyme PDE-4, which relieves the gripping pain of a cramp.

Mefenamic acid

Mefenamic acid blocks prostaglandin production, which makes it particularly useful for the cramping pain of periods where prostaglandins drive the uterine contractions.

• Nausea
• Low blood pressure feeling
• Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea
• Drowsiness
• Rash

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Quick tips

• Sit or stand up slowly if it makes you light-headed
• It relieves cramping pain but does not treat the underlying cause — see a doctor if the pain keeps coming back
• Severe pain with fever or vomiting needs medical assessment, not just an antispasmodic
• Start it at the first sign of period pain rather than waiting for it to become severe
• Take after food
• Do not use for more than 7 days at a stretch without medical advice
