What Cheston Cold Tablet is used for

• Allergic rhinitis and hay fever
• Hives and itching
• Allergic skin reactions
• Itchy eyes
• Fever of any cause
• Headache and migraine
• Toothache, earache and body ache
• Period pain
• Pain after minor injury or surgery

How it works

Cetirizine

Cetirizine blocks histamine H1 receptors and so stops the sneezing, itching and watering that histamine causes in an allergic reaction.

Paracetamol

Paracetamol blocks the production of prostaglandins in the brain — the chemical messengers that create the sensation of pain and push the body's temperature set-point up. It relieves pain and brings fever down but has very little effect on inflammation.

• Drowsiness
• Dry mouth
• Headache
• Tiredness
• Generally very well tolerated at normal doses
• Nausea in some people
• Rash (uncommon)

Most side effects are mild and settle as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor if any of them persist or trouble you.

Quick tips

• Take it at night if it makes you drowsy
• One tablet a day is enough for most adults
• Avoid alcohol while taking it
• Check the label of cold, flu and pain combination medicines — many already contain paracetamol, and doses add up
• Never exceed 4 grams (usually 8 tablets of 500 mg) in 24 hours for an adult
• If fever does not settle in 3 days, see a doctor rather than continuing on your own
