How it works

Calcium carbonate supplies calcium for bone and also neutralises stomach acid on contact, which is why it appears both as a supplement and as an antacid.

• Split the dose — the body absorbs only about 500 mg of calcium at a time
• Keep it at least 4 hours away from thyroxine and 2 hours from iron or antibiotics
• Vitamin D is needed for calcium to be absorbed properly
